HowTo Windows System

Assign hotkey to your application without additional software

hotkey Keyboard shortcut is well known and widely adopted to speed up working. And there are lots of hotkey utilities around to launch your favorite apps without a mouse move. However, you might not know that, Windows itself, can assign hotkey to an application, without any 3rd party software(thus no additional resource consumed).

This is easy and works from Windows95 to the newest Windows Vista. Just navigate through your start menu, find the program you’d like to configure, right click the icon and select “Properties”

Next, focus on the shortcut field and press any key(or key combination) you’d like to use. Please notice that most of keys are limited to use in the form of Ctrl + Alt + Key. For example, if you press N, the hotkey would be Ctrl+Alt+N.

However, F keys(F1 to F12) and keys on numpad are not limited, so you can specify any combination of Ctrl/Alt/Shift along with it. The screenshot below adds a hotkey of “Ctrl+Shift+F9″ to notepad.

To remove a hotkey assignment, simply press “Backspace“.

It might be a bug that the shortcuts must on desktop or in startup menu, otherwise, the hotkey can be set but wouldn’t respond at all.
