U.S. Ranks Low in Google Downtime Study

google_logo The U.S. ranks near the bottom in a global survey of downtime for the Google Web search site.

Among 32 key countries Google plays in locally, its home country of the United States came in near the bottom, in position 26, with 31 minutes of downtime from Sept. 1, 2006, to Sept. 1, 2007, according to Web performance survey results released Sept. 27 by Pingdom.

“Google Search users in the United States are 10 times more likely to encounter a problem than users in Brazil,” said the report. Brazil did indeed fare well, sustaining only 3 minutes of downtime during that same period.

Rounding out the top five localized Google’s sites were Netherlands (11 minutes of downtime), India (12 minutes), Thailand (13 minutes) and Japan (15 minutes). The five worst sites were Israel (34 minutes), Turkey (40 minutes), Singapore (46 minutes), Taiwan (46 minutes) and Sweden (48 minutes).

“Even though this survey contains some surprising results, none of the monitored websites passed below 99.99 percent uptime, which has to be considered extremely good, even for a company with the resources of Google,” the report said.
