AMD lowers desktop CPU prices
AMD has adjusted prices for its desktop processors along with new 45 watt single-core CPUs in the manufacturer’s lineup.
The price reduction is less dramatic than the previous rounds, but drives the firm’s fastest desktop processors even deeper into the mainstream and entry-level segment, making room for the higher performing Phenom CPUs. AMD’s dual-core desktop processors, excluding the $599 Quad FX-74, include 14 different CPUs ranging from $68 for the Athlon 64 X2 4000+ to $220 for the X2 6400+ Black Edition. In comparison, Intel offers 22 dual- and quad-core processors from $74 to $530 (not including four Extreme Edition CPUs)
We have compiled a chart of AMD’s current Athlon 64 X2 processors below, which indicates that the retail market has already caught up with AMD’s price reductions. Of the 10 currently available X2 processors, six models can be purchased for the tray price or less. Only the 6000+, 5200+ and 4200+, which has become a rare sight in the market, are selling above the tray price.
AMD has also quietly introduced two new processors that are aiming for low-power applications. The LE-1620 and LE-1600 are single-core CPUs with the 65 nm core of the Athlon 64. The 2.4 GHz LE-1620 (1 MB L2 cache, 45 watt) is priced at $53; the 2.2 GHz LE-1600 (1 MB L2 cache, 45 watt) lists for $47.
