network Bidding began Tuesday for prime new pieces of Internet real estate with the launch of the “.asia” domain name, which aims to become one of the web’s most desirable addresses.

The regional domain comes after the launch of the European-based .eu name last year and aims to join .com and .net as a widely used website suffix.

google_logo Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer saying Google reads customer email as part of a failed bid to drive ad-based revenue.

The software giant’s chief made the remarks during a discussion about consumer software revenue models, and Ballmer used the dialogue as an entry point to take his shot at Google. The video is available to watch via the web site Mydeo.com. Ballmer made his remarks after an audience member asked him if an advertising model could support software business in the future. The CEO said a combination of models - - commercial and ad-paid - - would go forward.

On October 4, Microsoft finally provided an official gameplan of what it’s readying on the healthcare software and services front.

The open beta of HealthVault, is a client application plus a Live service that will allow consumers to build and maintain a personal health record. One of the inputs into this health record will be results from Microsoft’s health search-engine, also known as HealthVault, which is based on the MedStory search technology Microsoft bought a year ago.

amd Advanced Micro Devices announced yet another price slashing movement of its dual core central processing units.

On the other side of the fence Intel is preparing too as the company announced the imminent launch of two high performance desktop chipsets, as well as the soon to come release of its 45 nanometer processing units that are poised to directly compete with AMD’s product lines.

So between their business and technology, where does all of this leave Creative? Simply put, it would be difficult to argue they’re not in a very bad situation.

usbpendrive_mount Version 1.1 of the Wireless USB specification will include “touch and go” capabilities, which will allow devices to be brought into close proximity with the host, allowing them to be instantly associated, without the need for manual setup.

The Wireless USB specification, version 1.0, is slowly rolling out as part of wireless devices. Both IOGEAR and Icron have announced their own Wireless USB hubs, although both are pricey: $395, in the case of the Icron hub.

HD Recorder Can Use Standard DVDs

panasonic_logo Matsushita, the world’s largest consumer electronics maker, plans to offer the world’s first DVD recorders that can store full high-definition programs on conventional DVD discs next month.

The new device is expected to be a boon for the backer of the Blu-ray format; Blu-ray uses discs several times more expensive than standard DVD media. While the DVD discs won’t have the capacity of a Blu-ray disc, the content will be of similar visual quality.

Ebay Desktop allows users to track auctions, see bid histories, and save relevant information directly to and from a mini-app that runs in the background on a PC desktop.

microsoft-logo Microsoft itself is the surprise winner of the FFII’s Kayak Prize 2007, offered by the FFII in its call for rejection of Microsoft’s OOXML standards proposal.

The software monopolist is honored as “Best Campaigner against OOXML Standardization.” FFII president Pieter Hintjens explains, “We could never have done this by ourselves. By pushing so hard to get OOXML endorsed, even to the point of loading the standards boards in Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, and beyond, Microsoft showed to the world how poor their format is. Good standards just don’t need that kind of pressure.
