Another geeky prank from MIT.

Back in 1999, Massachusetts Institute of Technology students decorated the campus’ Great Dome to look like Star Wars robot R2D2 in celebration of the legendary film series’ first prequel in 1999. But Star Wars prequels are so last decade. These days, it’s all about the much-hyped Xbox 360 title Halo 3. And why prank your own campus when you can pull a fast one on those snotty Crimsons next door?

ebay Hackers brazenly posted sensitive information including home addresses and phone numbers for 1,200 eBay users to the official online forum dedicated to fraud prevention on the auction site.

The information - which also included user names and email, and possibly their credit card numbers and three-digit CVV2 numbers - was visible for more than an hour to anyone visiting the forum. The miscreants appeared to create a script that caused each user to log in and post information associated with the person who owned the account. The script spit out about 15 posts per minute, starting around 5:45 a.m. California time.

Thinking you’re getting away with something on the sly while the world laughs at you, anticipating your inevitable demise.

Dane Brown says

Last week a number of computers were stolen from our office in Vancouver, BC. One of those computers was a shared iMac with Flickrbooth, an app that automatically uploads photo booth shots to our flickr account, installed on it. Just this morning a friend called to tell us that there are photos of whoever has the computer now in our flickr stream! Obviously the guy didn’t know he was uploading images of himself and his awesome tattoos.

games A recent paper shows video games do hurt GPAs.

The paper is being published by the National Bureau of Economic Research that contains a careful study of the correlations between students’ use of their time and academic achievement. It also carries a detailed dissection of the use of two statistical methods to examine the raw data produced during the study. But, in the end, it will probably go down in history based on the headlines it generates, which are likely to be along the lines of “Video games hurt GPAs.”
