Which is better for HTPC, the PureVideo HD in G84/G86 or UVD in ATI RV610/RV630? Bottom line is, they’re really powerful in video decoding compare to their precursors, even a $50 card can beat its $500 “big brother” in case of HDVideo decoding.
The newest recent low and mid-range graphics cards from AMD-ATI and NVIDIA have an extended and new video processing unit that can decode all the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD glory. It’s a good time to put some of the newer graphics cards to the test.

Yet another lawsuit has been hurled towards the RIAA. This one, which seeks class-action status, was brought about by another one of the RIAA’s former targets, a woman from Oregon, Tanya Anderson.
The suit alleges, among other things, that the RIAA used low and downright illegal tactics to pry information out of people. It also claims that the RIAA and MediaSentry both know they are using illegal tactics and have flawed investigations.

A mod chipping company called Team Symbiote has apparently created an application for owners of its Wii mod chip that enables the console to play back DVDs.
This may not be the first mod to enable DVD playback, but since Nintendo still hasn’t got around to providing the console with playback capabilities, we thought it’d be worth bringing it up again. Nintendo, how about hurrying up and making it so normal people don’t have to buy dodgy chips to play a DVD or two on their console?

The Chinese hacker made it again: SLIC enabled bioses for almost all Thinkpad with PM processor or higher, include but don’t limit to X31, X32, X40, X41, R40, T40, T41, T42(p), T43(p), R50, T60(p), X60(s) and the list is still increasing, just almost all the Thinkpad models made in the last 3 years.
The SLIC(Software Licensing Description Table) table in BIOS is used by OEM versions of Windows Vista for activation by Royalty OEMs in order for the end-user to not have problems with activating, called SLP 2.0, or System-Locked Preinstallation 2.0. For activation to work, clients obtained through the OEM channels that have an ACPI_SLIC table in the system BIOS are required to have a valid Windows marker in the same ACPI_SLIC table. The appearance of the Windows marker is important for volume license customers who are planning to use Windows Vista volume-licensed media to re-image or upgrade OEM through the re-imaging rights provided in their volume license agreement. Not having the appropriate BIOS marker results in the following error or errors on these systems and prevents them from activating. However, a modified BIOS with proper SLIC table can let the client PC by-pass the Vista activation process.

The Zend Optimizer can accelerate php execution speed greatly. However, in some shared web hosting service, its not pre-installed and self installation is only available to accounts with shell access. It’s more of a marketing gimmick than technology limitation.
The Zend Optimizer is a freeware tool for parsing pre-compiled PHP files. These PHP files must first have been compiled with the Zend Encoder which however is not a freeware. The advantage of pre-compiled files is that they do not need to be parsed repeatedly and therefore execute faster.

Innovation in the flash drive sphere seems to be limited to bringing the price down, and adding on new security features. Corsair’s new “Flash Padlock” flash drive seemingly does both. By retailing at $29.99 and $39.99 in 1GB and 2GB variants, and tacking on a PIN based security system that limits who can access the drive. The benefit to the Flash Padlock is that its security solution is entirely hardware based, so it’s supposedly working under all systems as well as impervious to hackers and crackers and other deviant folks.
