A summary of Windows XP power schemes as they relate to Intel processor throttling. Old topic, but one still relevant as many business notebooks still use XP.
In Windows XP, you can access the power profiles by going to Control Panel -> Power Options -> Power Schemes. There are a number of Windows XP built-in power schemes and from this user interface, it’s easy to assume that’s the only difference between each of the power schemes, but in truth there are hidden meanings to each setting when it comes to how the processor is programmed to react to different loads (computing tasks).

It won’t downgrade the firmware, meaning so far you can’t re-unlock an iPhone that’s been 1.1.1, but it’s still 1.0.2 in all its third-party application glory.
The iPhone Dev Team folks are working on a way to downgrade the new firmware to let people unlock their phones again, but for now AT&T users sitting pretty, and non-AT&T folks can at least do the WiFi thing.

Officials at LAX are introducing a bold new idea into their arsenal: random placement of security checkpoints. Can game theory help keep us safe?
Anxious to thwart future terror attacks in the early stages while plotters are casing the airport, LAX security patrols have begun using a new software program called ARMOR, to make the placement of security checkpoints completely unpredictable. Now all airport security officials have to do is press a button labeled “Randomize,” and they can throw a sort of digital cloak of invisibility over where they place the cops’ antiterror checkpoints on any given day.

The U.S. ranks near the bottom in a global survey of downtime for the Google Web search site.
Among 32 key countries Google plays in locally, its home country of the United States came in near the bottom, in position 26, with 31 minutes of downtime from Sept. 1, 2006, to Sept. 1, 2007, according to Web performance survey results released Sept. 27 by Pingdom.

Mobile phones will not cause cancer or slow the brain, according to a recently published six-year-long study.
The Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) Program, possibly the largest investigation so far into health risks associated with mobile telephone technology, was set up to resolve uncertainties identified by previous evaluations of the possible health risks associated with the widespread use of mobile phone technology.

As long as competition stays reasonably tight, though, the real winner isn’t going to be Intel or AMD: it’s going to be the end-users.
Both AMD and Intel have enough horsepower with their integrated graphics solutions to drive Windows Vista’s Aero interface, so if you’re not going to be gaming then either integrated graphics solutions is more than enough. Windows and animations did seem to render more smoothly on the Intel platform but we’re not sure if that’s a driver, GPU, or CPU advantage.

Aim on moving software-running virtual machines from servers running older Intel processors to the chipmaker’s next-generation Xeon designs.
VMware is building support for Intel’s FlexMigration assist for virtualized environments in VMware’s Vmotion technology, which is used to move running virtual machines from one physical server to another. The collaboration is expected to help VMware customers move virtual machines to Intel’s upcoming processors based on its 45nm scale process technology, Jake Smith of Intel’s Advance Server Technology Group told InformationWeek.

The stealth updates by Microsoft in July and August could prevent Windows XP users from installing up to 80 recent patches.
Microsoft officials say they are investigating reports that files the company deployed this summer prevent Windows XP users who run a built-in “repair” function from installing as many as 80 of the company’s latest security patches.

The Redmond’s best selling OS is still going strong
Due to the high demand and feedback, Microsoft is extending sales of Windows XP among OEM and retail channels for an additional five months, till June 30, 2008. Also, the sale of Starter Edition, aiming emerging low-cost PC market, will extend till June 30, 2010.
