The popular Archiver, achieves another gold release.
WinRAR is a 32-bit Windows version of RAR Archiver, an archiver and archive manager. RAR files can usually compress content by 8 percent to 15 percent more than ZIP files can. WinRAR’s main features include strong general and multimedia compression, the ability to process non-RAR archive formats, ZIP compression and decompression, support for long filenames, programmable self-extracting archives (SFX), repair of damaged archives, authenticity verification, embedded file comments, and encryption. Unicode is supported in archive filenames, allowing non-English filenames to be handled painlessly. You can manipulate the parameters of many archives at once and view a volume sequence as a single archive. WinRAR can convert other archive formats to RAR and search for specified text and files in archives.

Master data management will be part of Office 14, a first Community Technology Preview (CTP) of which is due in the first quarter of 2008.
Master data management is technology that allows for the management of common reference data across disparate IT systems or groups. Microsoft stuck a toe in the MDM space in June 2007 with its acquisition of privately held MDM specialist Stratature. Microsoft said at the time of the acquisition that it planned to withdraw existing Stratature products from the market and instead integrate the Stratature +EDM technology into Office applications and servers.

A zero-day PDF vulnerability in Adobe’s Acrobat Reader has come to light that can lead to Windows boxes getting taken over completely and invisibly, according to a security researcher.
“All it takes is to open a [maliciously rigged] PDF document or stumble across a page which embeds one,” said researcher Petko D. Petkov, aka pdp, in a blog posting on Sept. 20.

Users running Firefox are vulnerable to IE flaws via files supported by Windows Media Player, a researcher shows.
Running Firefox or Opera as a default browser won’t save you from unpatched Internet Explorer vulnerabilities—a fact made explicit when a researcher showed how easy it is to put HTML inside files supported by Windows Media Player.
Researcher Petko D. Petkov said in a Sept. 18 blog posting that he’s found that a fully patched Windows XP Service Pack 2 system running Internet Explorer 6 or 7 along with Windows Media Player 9—the default, although the media player is now up to Version 11—will open any page of an attacker’s choice even if the default browser is not Internet Explorer.

Six days after proof-of-concept code was released for a long-unpatched bug in Apple’s QuickTime media player, Firefox is updated with a fix.
Last week, Mozilla confirmed that a year-old unpatched vulnerability in Apple’s QuickTime media player opens up a backdoor that could allow a hacker to break into Firefox. A researcher who discovered the flaw posted proof-of-concept exploits for it on his blog.
Now a week later, Mozilla released Firefox 2.0.0.7 to patch the QuickTime vulnerability.

Microsoft is making the third service pack for Office 2003 available for free download, which the company says strengthens the product’s defenses against malicious software. The popular Fast Save feature is disabled due to security reason.
“Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 is the culmination of several years of improvements to the product suite … It makes it easier to work with the Windows Vista operating system, exchange files with people who use the 2007 Microsoft Office system, and interact with servers in the 2007 release. SP3 also minimizes the issues that previously caused distractions,” a white paper released along with the service pack says.

Though much argued, I still prefer to adopt UAC in Windows Vista, so to launch an app in administrator mode, I have to right click and select “Run as administrator”. Being a command line fan, it would be convenient to have it done through some keystrokes.
I searched and found some tool, works fine, but its a bit bulky and comes with lots of (unnecessary) features. To keep things simple, I decide to write one myself. And its done with a size of 6K.

Google may just be the center of the universe now. A new add-on for its Earth satellite program, called Sky, lets users explore space and see photos of the precise star formation overhead based on their locale.
People can now use Google to peruse astrological wonders such as the Crab Nebula, an expanding remnant of a supernova 6,300 light-years from earth. Markers within the star photos pull in explanatory text from online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Overlays outline constellations such as Leo, illustrate phases of the moon and show how the planets visible from Earth orbit over two months.
