Of the 61 billion searches in August, more than 35 billion of them were powered by Google, according to the latest statistics.
The data is part of a new monthly survey from Comscore that measures search activity on a worldwide scale, scoping out the top 50 Internet properties.
According to the study, 95% of all connected Internet users globally use search engines. That is more than 750 million people. They generated a total of 61 billion search requests in August. The data was released this week.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer saying Google reads customer email as part of a failed bid to drive ad-based revenue.
The software giant’s chief made the remarks during a discussion about consumer software revenue models, and Ballmer used the dialogue as an entry point to take his shot at Google. The video is available to watch via the web site Mydeo.com. Ballmer made his remarks after an audience member asked him if an advertising model could support software business in the future. The CEO said a combination of models - - commercial and ad-paid - - would go forward.

YouTube is now an important teaching tool at UC Berkeley.
The school announced on Wednesday that it has begun posting entire course lectures on the Web’s No.1 video-sharing site.
Berkeley officials claimed in a statement that the university is the first to make full course lectures available on YouTube. The school said that over 300 hours of videotaped courses will be available at youtube.com/ucberkeley.

The company is readying a rival to Google’s Documents and Spreadsheets
The software maker is announcing Office Live Workspace, a free online tool for viewing, sharing and storing–but not editing–Office documents online. (It’s existing Office Live efforts will be rebranded as Office Live Small Business.) It’s not quite ready–starting Monday customers will be able to put in their name to be part of a beta testing program expected to begin later this year.

The U.S. ranks near the bottom in a global survey of downtime for the Google Web search site.
Among 32 key countries Google plays in locally, its home country of the United States came in near the bottom, in position 26, with 31 minutes of downtime from Sept. 1, 2006, to Sept. 1, 2007, according to Web performance survey results released Sept. 27 by Pingdom.
