A bipartisan bill that would let victims of identity theft seek restitution for money and time they spent repairing their credit history was introduced on Tuesday in the Senate.
Last year, 8.4 million Americans were victims of identity theft, and many were left with a bad credit report, which takes months or years to repair, the lawmakers said. The legislation would also give federal prosecutors more tools to combat identity theft and cybercrime.

Outside developers will be allowed to create programs for the iPhone, changing a policy that had angered many.
Blocking outsiders from making programs that would run easily on the iPhone has been one of a series of restrictions that have annoyed users, even leading to some lawsuits.
Jobs, in comments on Apple’s Web site, said a kit for developers still will not be available until February, as the company works out how to open up the phone without exposing it to malicious programs.

Washington man accused of faking emergency call that sent armed response to unsuspecting Lake Forest family’s home.
SWAT officers expected to find a victim shot to death, drugs and a belligerent armed suspect when they surrounded the home of an unsuspecting couple, but found they were only a part of a false emergency call caused by a teenager who hacked into the county’s emergency response system, authorities said.
As officers swarmed the home with assault rifles, dogs and a helicopter, a Lake Forest couple and their two toddlers inside their home slept unsuspectingly.

iPhone Dev Team releases AnySim 1.1 today, a free unlocking app that enables iPhones with both firmware version 1.02 and 1.1.1 to operate on any GSM network.
The hack only works with “virgin” iPhones right now, and unlocking a 1.0.2 phone and updating to 1.1.1 will result in a bricked device, but the team says they’ll be releasing a “revirginizer” for locked 1.1.1 phones soon. As always, hack at your own risk — and don’t expect future updates to go smoothly.
Instructions for applying this release are as follows:

Apple has shipped an iPhone software update for security purpose, also disable 3rd party apps and unlocking.
The mega which shipped today as iPhone v1.1.1, patches seven holes in Safari, a code execution and denial-of-service bug in Bluetooth, and two flaws affecting the built-in Mail service, which could allow malicious hackers to launch executable code, steal e-mail credentials or take control of the device’s phone-dialing capabilities.
Also, a post-update reactivation requires a genuine AT&T SIM. In other words, it looks like Apple may have just disabled thousands of unlocked phones around the world.

Hackers brazenly posted sensitive information including home addresses and phone numbers for 1,200 eBay users to the official online forum dedicated to fraud prevention on the auction site.
The information - which also included user names and email, and possibly their credit card numbers and three-digit CVV2 numbers - was visible for more than an hour to anyone visiting the forum. The miscreants appeared to create a script that caused each user to log in and post information associated with the person who owned the account. The script spit out about 15 posts per minute, starting around 5:45 a.m. California time.
