Although Apple is closing security holes with the update, hackers have kept opening up the devices.
Apple has released, only through their iTunes application, a 1.1.2 system update for the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
This addressed an “ImageIO” vulnerability that could allow the execution of malicious code through the viewing of a doctored TIFF image, according to Apple. The malicious TIFF image could cause a buffer overflow that could either crash an application or run code, according to Apple’s technical note on the issue. But in real life, its used to jailbreak iPod and iPhone.

Stop. I mean, don’t stop reading this, but stop thinking what you’re about to think. Or, O.K., I’ll think it for you:
The thing is hard to type on. It’s too slow. It’s too big. It doesn’t have instant messaging. It’s too expensive. (Or, no, wait, it’s too cheap!) It doesn’t support my work e-mail. It’s locked to AT&T. Steve Jobs secretly hates puppies. And—all together now—we’re sick of hearing about it! Yes, there’s been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apple’s iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Five reasons:

The exact details of AT&T’s revenue-sharing agreement with Apple have not been disclosed, but one analyst thinks that over the two-year life of a user contract, the amount exceeds the actual price of the iPhone.
Silicon Alley Insider spotted a research note from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster estimating that Apple is receiving $18 per month for each iPhone subscriber, under the revenue-sharing agreement between the two companies. Apple has confirmed that such an agreement exists, but has not shared the details about exactly how much cash it’s getting from the revenue AT&T makes on iPhone customers using the carrier’s data network. In July, Munster estimated Apple was receiving just $3 per iPhone subscriber and $11 per iPhone customers new to AT&T, but he’s rethought the numbers after Apple’s latest earnings release.

Apple agrees to sell iPhones in France unlocked
The move comes after Apple met a roadblock when its international policy of banning unlocking was challenged by French law. A French telecommunications law, passed in 1998 states that manufacturers must offer to unlock consumers phones for a small fee for the first sixth months after release, and for free after that, as reported via French news site Les Echoes.

Outside developers will be allowed to create programs for the iPhone, changing a policy that had angered many.
Blocking outsiders from making programs that would run easily on the iPhone has been one of a series of restrictions that have annoyed users, even leading to some lawsuits.
Jobs, in comments on Apple’s Web site, said a kit for developers still will not be available until February, as the company works out how to open up the phone without exposing it to malicious programs.

iPhone Dev Team releases AnySim 1.1 today, a free unlocking app that enables iPhones with both firmware version 1.02 and 1.1.1 to operate on any GSM network.
The hack only works with “virgin” iPhones right now, and unlocking a 1.0.2 phone and updating to 1.1.1 will result in a bricked device, but the team says they’ll be releasing a “revirginizer” for locked 1.1.1 phones soon. As always, hack at your own risk — and don’t expect future updates to go smoothly.
Instructions for applying this release are as follows:

The controversy over iPhone rages on, as it is now facing a class action lawsuit over its proprietary and forceful relationship with AT&T.
Lawyers filed the suit asking for $1.2 billion in damages because the phone is specifically locked to only allow one service provider. It is brought against Apple on behalf of Washington resident Paul Holman and Lucy Rivello, from California.
