Wired Ethernet is not going to be replaced by 802.11n or any other wireless technology on the horizon anytime soon, if ever.

How do I make such a bold statement? Well, the facts really speak for themselves. The figure below is taken from the Wireless Performance Charts and show downlink throughput vs. path loss curves for three draft 11n products, representing the three major draft 11n chipsets.

Figure 1: Downlink Throughput - 20 MHz bandwidth mode

ie7-logo Avoid the annoying prompt permanently.

Internet Explorer 7(IE7) is intended to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software, and it also features full user control of ActiveX and better security framework. It put more restrict control over SSL certificate, and completely blocks any site with a self-signed certificate.

bt-logo While ISPs start limiting BitTorrent Traffic, there are still some way to get around it. While there are valid arguments for and against these limitations, we’re not here to debate. We just want the fastest BitTorrent transfers possible.

Even though many of them deny it, most ISPs actively engage in traffic shaping, bandwidth throttling, connection denial or some such tactic to keep the amount of bandwidth consumed by high traffic applications on their networks to a minimum. While this does often ensure better performance for everyone in the neighborhood, it can mean painfully slow transfer speeds for those dabbling in P2P — legit or not.

wifi Researcher David Maynor has published details of the controversial Apple Wi-Fi hack he disclosed at last year’s Black Hat conference.

Maynor had been under a nondisclosure agreement, which had previously prevented him from publishing details of the hack, but the NDA is over now and by going public with the information, Maynor hopes to help other Apple researchers with new documentation on things like Wi-Fi debugging and the Mac OS X kernel core dumping facility.”

vista-8th-notes Users report that the network performance drops to 1/10 of original while music is playing, regardless the player.

“Over the months since Vista’s release, there has been no doubt about the reduced level of network performance experienced compared to Windows XP. However, some users over at the 2CPU forums have discovered an unexplained connection with audio playback resulting in a cap at approximately 5%-10% of total network throughput. Whenever any audio is being sent to a sound card (even, several users report, while paused), network performance is instantly reduced. As soon as the audio is stopped, the throughput begins to climb to its expected speed. And changing music player wouldn’t do any help.

It’s a tough one for users — what do you pick, sound or speed? So much for multi-tasking.

zend The Zend Optimizer can accelerate php execution speed greatly. However, in some shared web hosting service, its not pre-installed and self installation is only available to accounts with shell access. It’s more of a marketing gimmick than technology limitation.

The Zend Optimizer is a freeware tool for parsing pre-compiled PHP files. These PHP files must first have been compiled with the Zend Encoder which however is not a freeware. The advantage of pre-compiled files is that they do not need to be parsed repeatedly and therefore execute faster.

vista2 The ICS is buggy in Vista and might lead to random connection drops.

When ICS service is Enabled, after a few hours (no specified time frame, might happen anytime) the connections on Vista PC running ICS would down and no more new connection can be made, while the client PC is still working.
