nvidia_logo-thumb A technique for cracking computer passwords using inexpensive off-the-shelf computer graphics hardware is causing a stir in the computer security community.

It may not be the most popular thing to consider, but high-end graphics cards contain a very powerful internal computing engine, called the GPU.  This massively parallel device can attack a problem in parallel, rather than serial as most CPUs are required to process data.  This means it can compute many hundreds of simultaneous calculations.  This is actually how 3D graphics cards get their high-speed gaming abilities.  Still, a new use has been found for this robust computing engine:  password cracking.

Time to sell your old 8800GTS even 8800GTX on eBay.

According to the test, the 8800GT is only 17% than an Ultra on the test. Considering this is done on 4xAA and 8xAF, we can definitely expect better score without AA. According to a manufacturer, the 512MB 8800GT will cost you about 1,999RMB(266.2 USD).

nvidia_logo-thumb The launch date of nVidia’s upcoming GeForce 8800 GT (G92) GPU is brought to October 29 from the original November 12, targeting AMD’s new Radeon HD 2950PRO (RV670) as the major competitor.

With G92 and RV670 having a tight performance/price ratio, Nvidia’s earlier launch should give the company an advantage in the market, noted the sources.

In addition to G92, Nvidia will also launch the G98 GPU to replace the GeForce 8600 series, however the launch date has not yet been set, added the sources.

The new G92 is the first to transition to 65nm transistors, and will support PCIe 2.0, featuring 112 stream processors and 256bit memory interface. The G92 is supposed to replace the EOL 8800GTS 320MB.
